Mass casualty training at DeSales, 10/5

On the morning of Friday, October 5, DeSales University and Cedar Crest College student nurses, in cooperation with DSU EMS leaders, will deal with a nightmare. The scenario feigns a tornado striking the tennis courts at DeSales University during an NCAA championship leaving injured, dying, and dead victims throughout the area.

This event provides a large-scale, dynamic opportunity to exercise coordination, collaborative management, and emergency medical care given a mass-casualty situation (MASCAL) event. DSU and Cedar Crest nursing students, Lehigh Valley Hospital Emergency Management and health care providers, LVAIC EMS, Lehigh and Northampton County Emergency Management, and up to a dozen municipal ambulance squads will coordinate for – and provide patient care to – victims of a type of MASCAL event that could happen anywhere.

Nursing students will engage up to 27 patient profiles prepared by the DSU Nursing Department and replicated on volunteer victims prepared for the drill using moulage or on smart, hi-fidelity manikins. Nursing students will be supervised in triage, first aid, transport, patient care and management, and emergency medicine by DeSales, Cedar Crest and Lehigh Valley Hospital faculty & staff. Lehigh Valley Hospital will deploy its surge/field hospital and MEDEVAC helicopter to the scene of the disaster. DSU Faculty and Lehigh Valley Hospital doctors with a head nurse from Pennsylvania Air National Guard Special Operations will challenge nursing students to handle the intensity found in emergency medical situations.

The event will be followed by an after action review conducted between faculty and students.
