Summer Video Institute, 6/17-6/22

If you know a High School or a college student that is thinking about a career in TV or Film industry, SVI is a fantastic opportunity to see if filmmaking is something that they might really enjoy and want to pursue in college and as a career. It’s an intensive course that starts with the basics of storytelling and camera techniques, to complete projects and post production. Students make their own films with a crew and learn everything that’s involved with a professional film set.

It is a 6 day intensive workshop from 9-5 where students learn all of the basics of filmmaking: how to use a camera-(properly, with all manual functions), framing shots & techniques, sound, storytelling, working with a crew, editing and post production. Students get to work on a crew with other students who also have a great passion for filmmaking. Each student will write & direct 2 projects of their own, with their crew, and work with a larger crew on a longer group film. We screen the projects in a film festival on the last day. It is a lot of fun and totally hands-on.

  • We start shooting the first day and all students will have personalized help working on all phases of filmmaking.
  • 3 college credits for students with a HS graduation date of 2015 or earlier.
  • On-campus housing is available.

Advanced Summer Video Institute –June 24 to June 29

An intensive but fun 3 college credit course for students that have either taken Summer Video Institute or have more experience with video. This class teaches advanced techniques in lighting, framing, editing and camera mount usage. This class really gives you an opportunity to produce a professional film.

Special discount offer from the PA Shakespeare Festival

From a manor house outside of London to the halls of power in Vienna to the vast plains of Oklahoma, designs for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s 22nd season reflect the diversity of the programming: Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and King Henry VIII, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Patrick Barlow’s The 39 Steps and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s legendary musical, Oklahoma!

All DSU faculty and staff are invited to attend any performance at the discounted price of $25 — which is up to half off — or upgrade to A+ seating for an additional $3. Call the Box Office at 610.282.WILL [9455].

“More than 30 directors and designers will create the sets, costumes, lights and special effects this season,” says Producing Artistic Director Patrick Mulcahy. “Winners and nominees of our industry’s leading awards are members of our teams here.” DSU Director of Theatre Dennis Razze will direct Oklahoma!

A fully professional theatre hosted by a university provides for wonderful synergies.  Both the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival (PSF) and DSU both have a keen interest in the power of language and ideas, and in the liberal arts. Both organizations hold education as a core value.

There are many dimensions to PSF’s education programming.  One is the summer internship program for DSU theatre students.  There are other university-professional theatre partnerships nationwide, though there are none that offer the same level of access to internships of such high professional value for undergraduates as PSF.  It is common for high level professional theatres to have such a relationship with a Master of Fine Arts program, but not with a Bachelor of Arts program.  PSF and the DeSales Theatre Department make each other stronger.  PSF provides the high level opportunity; DSU Theatre provides an extraordinary group of students to supplement the professionals who predominate in each cast and in the production shops.
