Dr. Shara McCallum, Director of the Stadler Poetry Center, Bucknell University, will read from her work tonight, October 31, at 7 p.m. in the Commonwealth Room of the University Center. McCallum’s reading kicks off events for the 29th Annual DeSales University Poetry Festival.
Winner of many awards for her poetry, including a 2013 Witter-Bynum Prize (awarded by Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey) and a 2011 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, McCallum is the author of four collections of poetry, most recently The Face of Water: New and Selected Poems. Individual poems have appeared in many of the best American literary journals, including The Iowa Review, The Southern Review, Verse, Callaloo, and The Antioch Review. Born in Jamaica to Afro-Jamaican and Venezuelan parents, she earned her M.F.A. from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in Poetry and African American and Caribbean Literature from Binghamton University.
