Changes to “Use-or-lose” Rule for Medical Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

On October 31, 2013, the IRS released Notice 2013-71, relaxing the use-or-lose rule for medical FSAs.  As a result of this new rule, participants will be allowed to carry over up to $500 in unused funds from the 2014 plan year to the 2015 plan year.  Please know that because we are adopting the carryover option for calendar 2014 , the grace period currently in place for calendar 2013 allowing reimbursement of services until March 31 of the following year will not be permitted in calendar 2014. The advantages to this carry over option allows for less risk of forfeiting funds and these funds may roll over to use next year.  Please note, however, that any unused balance over $500 will be forfeited.  If you wish to increase the election amount under the medical FSA account you have already submitted to us, kindly complete the attached enrollment form again and re-submit it to Human Resources by Friday, December 13, 2013 (Note: we are extending the enrollment due date by one week for the medical FSA program only).  If you should have any immediate questions, please feel free to call us.

The DeSales Medal

Each year at the November meeting, the Board of Trustees selects a recipient for the DeSales Medal, which is conferred during the January commencement ceremony.

The DeSales Medal is the highest non-academic award given by the University. It honors a person whose life embodies the principles so dear to the hearts of Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal.

We are fortunate to have many members of our University community who live in ways that transcend the limits of our worldliness. Their humility, gentleness, and charity point to a source of love more profound than is common in our ordinary lives. It is important to name and honor them.

This year’s recipient of the DeSales Medal is Mrs. Fern Strunk.

Fern Strunk is a long-time friend and supporter of DeSales University who truly lives a life of Salesian spirit and inspiration.  Fern joined the health center as a nurse on 9/18/95 in a part-time capacity.  The following year she assumed the role of the Director of the Health Center until 2006.  Her commitment to the students and the department of Student Affairs throughout her time at Allentown College/DeSales University was evident.  Not only was she knowledgeable, experienced, and committed in how she performed her role of leading the Health Center, but she treated all with kindness, a caring attitude, and compassion.  She saw potential in every one of her patients and employees, working non-stop to support their development.

Please extend to Fern Strunk your individual congratulations and best wishes.
