Each year at this time I have the pleasure of inviting members of the faculty to consider assuming the directorship of the DeSales University Rome Program for two years hence.
In fall 2010, DeSales University established our own free-standing program in Rome, based at the Dante Alighieri Italian Language Center. Fifteen DSU students from any major may spend the fall semester in our program in Rome under the supervision of a DSU faculty member. Full-time DeSales faculty members in all disciplines are invited to submit applications by Wednesday, November 19, 2014, for the directorship of the fall 2016 program.
The duties of the Rome faculty director include:
- residing in Rome for the entire fall semester
- teaching a three-course load plus supervising student internships
- serving as the emergency contact person for the DeSales students in Rome
- working with Dante Center personnel to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the program.
- Accommodations for housing and travel for the faculty member are provided by DeSales University.
Interested faculty should submit to Dr. Brian Kane a two-page proposal outlining the three courses the faculty member proposes to teach. The courses should emphasize Rome and/or Italy, and preference will be given to applicants who will offer DeSales University core courses (e.g., Values Seminar, Humanities 3 or 4). Proposals should be approved by the faculty applicant’s Division Head, and preference will be given to faculty with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. A curriculum vitae should accompany the proposal. The deadline for proposals is November 15, 2013.
A committee comprised of Dr. Jerry Joyce, Dr. Kane, Mr. Brian MacDonald and Professor Elizabeth Rosa will review the applications. The committee’s recommendations are usually unanimous. If there is a difference of opinion, Dr. Kane, in his role as faculty representative for international learning, will make the decision. The Provost, as chief academic officer of the University, will ratify the decision and communicate it to the faculty member applicants no later than December 15, 2014.
The faculty member selected for fall 2016 will serve as an alternate for fall 2015, should the fall 2015 faculty director be unable to serve. The selection of Rome program faculty directors covers a two-year period so that faculty members and Divisions can adequately plan for the assignment.
Please contact Brian Kane with any questions that you might have.
