Campus Ministry Announcements

By Jennifer Southerton, Junior, Campus Ministry intern

For many students of DeSales, the season of Lent is off to a strong start! Lent is all about deeply examining our lives, seeking forgiveness for our sins, and drawing closer to Christ through sacrifice. The forty day Lenten observance began on February 10 with the distribution of ashes. Numerous Christians at DeSales entered Wills Hall throughout the day to receive the prominent mark of ashes, signifying that we are entering a solemn season of repentance. We were reminded of our need to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” All day, students were witnesses to the faith by simply walking around campus displaying the sign of the cross on their foreheads. At 5:00 that evening, students packed the chapel to partake in the holy Mass.

During this first week of Lent, the Women’s Group received an excellent presentation about various ways to approach the new liturgical season in order to holistically come closer to Christ and prepare for His resurrection. On Thursday, Stations of the Cross were held in Connelly Chapel where students spiritually walked through Jesus’ passion. It was the first time the beautiful and recently-dedicated stations were used! Students also had the opportunity to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament and receive the Sacrament of Penance this week.

Throughout campus, there have been conversations sparked by questions such as “How is Lent going for you so far?” or “What are you doing for Lent?” While many people are giving something up, there are several who are doing something extra. Some of the students’ Lenten promises include speaking to someone new each day, attending daily Mass, reading more spiritual materials, or praying the Rosary daily. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the key ways through which we can more fully enter into the season of Lent. These personal commitments can be fostered through many channels accessible at DeSales. Hopefully students will continue to grow closer to Christ during this solemn forty day journey.
