Tomorrow: July 2018 Lehigh Valley Business Sentiment Index to be Released

In partnership with DeSales University, Dr. Kamran Afshar, director of the recently formed Kamran Afshar Data Analytics Center at DeSales University (KADAC), will release the July 2018 update of the Lehigh Valley Business Sentiment Index (BSI) on Wednesday, August 15, at 10:00 a.m. in the Trexler Room of the DeSales University Center.

Along with his students, Dr. Afshar will analyze and comment on the BSI, which is based on quarterly data collected since 1998 and reflects Lehigh Valley businesses’ survey responses around key economic and political events.  Their review and analysis of the results of the July survey will disclose local businesses’ hiring, purchasing patterns, and revenues over the last 6 months, as well as their projected expenditures, hiring plans, and revenues in the next 6 months.

In addition, analysis and commentary will include Lehigh Valley business sentiment around recent changes in corporate and individual tax laws.

All are welcome to attend.

Malware we are encountering

Recently we have noticed an increase in malware infections soliciting or involving tech support requests or warnings. These viruses or trojans can be attached to other software you intend to install on your computer. One notice seemingly from Microsoft, that your computer is having an issue, has been making the rounds recently. It directs you to call a phone number, and the individual on the other end of the line requests payment from you, and remote access to your PC. This is a known scam. If you are targeted, please shutdown your computer and call the Helpdesk at x4357 immediately. A member of the DeSales University I.T. staff will examine your computer as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued vigilance and cooperation in keeping our computer network safe.

Runners, Joggers, Walkers Needed for Monday of Orientation!

Dear DSU Faculty and Staff,

During Orientation we will have a morning run for our first-year students on Monday, August 20 at 7:30 a.m. The group will meet in the Conmy/Tocik parking lot at 7:15 a.m. and we’ll have a 2 and 3 mile course for participants to follow, and finish back at the parking lot at 8 a.m. Our goal is to help students make healthy choices during the semester, meet other like-minded students, and feel comfortable in their new community.

We are looking for all fitness levels!

Congratulations Dr. Richard Noll on Being Named Honorary Visiting Professor by Japanese University

Courtesy: University of Shiga Prefecture

On June 15, Dr. Richard Noll, associate professor of psychology, was awarded the title of Honorary Visiting Professor from the University of Shiga Prefecture in Hikone. He was only the third person, and first non-Japanese scholar, to receive that honor. Previous awards went to a distinguished anthropologist that founded the National Museum of Anthropology and to a chemist who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1981.

Noll was awarded a research fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He made formal presentations at two universities and at the National Museum of Ethnology (MINPAKU) in Osaka. He also did fieldwork among ascetic Buddhist monks on Mt. Omine in Nara Prefecture and among indigenous Ryukyuan mediums/shamans in Okinawa known as yuta.
