Tuition letter 2017

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students of DeSales University,

I have announced my retirement from the presidency of DeSales University effective on July 1, 2017.  It has been my great honor to serve you in this important responsibility of providing quality higher education.  I joined the philosophy faculty of Allentown College of Saint Francis de Sales in 1974 and became president in 1999.  We became DeSales University two years later in 2001.  Just this week, the Board of Trustees elected another Oblate priest, Rev. James J. Greenfield, OSFS, from the Class of 1984, as the fourth president for DeSales.  I have total confidence that the high academic quality and the faithful Salesian spirituality will only grow stronger in the years ahead.

Since the beginning of the institution, we have had a very simple philosophy concerning tuition.  We were determined to be a very strong school with a focus upon academic excellence, solid character development, and the enhancement of the spiritual dimensions of life.  Our costs consistently remained in the average range for liberal arts institutions in the nation and in Pennsylvania.  We spent more on faculty salaries than average but kept the total number of employees below average.  This strategy has served us well.     [Read more…]

Registration for Fall Classes

In order to register for fall courses, students must consult with their academic advisors to obtain clearance to register between Monday, April 3 and Friday, April 7.

As preparation for this meeting, you should review your progress toward meeting course requirements and create a list of possible courses for the upcoming fall semester. To do this, use the Academic Evaluation feature in WebAdvisor (Academic Planning > Academic Evaluation) and/or the graduation requirement form for your major (available at The fall schedule will be posted on March 27 at MyDSU (Departments & Offices > Registrar’s Office).

You should also check your WebAdvisor account to learn when you may begin registering for your courses. After logging in, click on “Registration Status and Time.” For most students, this screen will indicate that they may register between April 10 and April 13. However, please note that some students may see a “hold,” which restricts them from registering. If you are one of these students, you must clear up the related matter before you may register.

HAZMAT Drill in Hurd Science Center, 3/28

The DeSales University Emergency Services Department will be conducting a HAZMAT drill on Tuesday, March 28, 2017.

The drill will simulate a chemical accident in one of the chemistry labs in the Hurd Science Center. During the drill, all occupants of the Hurd Science Center will be evacuated via the fire alarm system and all HVAC systems in the building will be temporarily shut down, in an effort to test the University’s response to such an event. The drill will begin at approximately 2:00 p.m.

All components of the Campus Emergency Alert System (CEALS) will be utilized during this drill, i.e. e2Campus, Big Voice, and the Visiplex indoor mass notification system. Please follow the instructions provided by CEALS. The drill will end at approximately 2:15 p.m.

Below are vital instructions to follow for the upcoming drill:

  • All occupants present at the time of the drill in the Hurd Science Center will be asked to evacuate the building, upon activation of the fire alarm system, and follow instructions provided by CEALS.
  • Occupants of other campus buildings are asked to avoid the Hurd Science Center and its immediate vicinity during the drill. We ask you to become familiar with all components of CEALS.
  • Please follow instructions broadcasted via the Campus Emergency Alert System (CEALS)
