A message from Fr. O’Connor: Salesian Center for Faith and Culture & DeSales Campus Ministry Office

These are just two brief announcements:

Salesian Center for Faith and Culture:

Fr. Thomas Dailey, OSFS, requested a one semester sabbatical last September to work on a book for college students that introduces the Devout Life for young people of today.  From discussions with members of the administration of Saint Charles Seminary, where Fr. Dailey serves on the Educational Affairs Committee of the Board, this sabbatical proposal morphed into a two semester project involving the formation of an endowed chair to honor John Cardinal Foley for his service to both the seminary and to the Vatican where he worked for many years in the Office of Social Communication.  In April, the Board of Trustees enthusiastically granted this request for a full two semesters.  For the year, therefore, Fr. Dailey, OSFS, will be living and working in Philadelphia.

I have decided to appoint Fr. John Fisher, OSFS, to serve as the Director of the Salesian Center for this year.  John is delighted to assume this responsibility.  Please welcome him into this new task with support and thanksgiving.

DeSales University Campus Ministry Office:

Two years ago, Fr. John Hanley, OSFS, ended a period of twenty years of service to the Office of Campus Ministry at DeSales.  Being a southerner at heart, he is delighted with his new assignment in our parish in Naples, Florida.  Knowing that Tim McIntire would soon be ordained to the priesthood and that he was interested in becoming the full-time chaplain for DeSales, our Provincial Fr. James Greenfield, OSFS, suggested that we try to manage without a full-time chaplain for one year and then welcome Tim for the 2013-2014 academic year.  With characteristic generosity, the Oblates of Wills Hall agreed to accept filling the void created by the lack of a chaplain for the spring semester of 2012-2013.  We owe the Oblate community of Wills Hall a great debt of gratitude for all the priestly ministry they assumed to cover this chaplaincy position.

The Office of Campus Ministry is now complete.  Ms. Maggie Riggins continues in her position as Director of Campus Ministry.  Fr. Tim McIntire, OSFS, returns as a newly ordained priest to oversee the sacramental ministry of the chaplain and to teach one theology class.  Sr. John Marie, OSFS, continues assisting the campus ministry team with individual spiritual counseling, vocation promotion, and a deep life of prayer.  Sister also teaches two courses for the education program.  Finally, Ben Durham provides for the musical demands of a vibrant liturgical community and directs three various choral groups on the campus.

Let us offer prayers to the Lord for providing such dedicated and talented people to work with our community in God’s holy service.

— Fr. Bernie O’Connor, OSFS

New! Wireless printing and environmental impact monitoring

Now you can print wirelessly to any public computer on campus and monitor your environmental impact!

In order to become a greener campus, DeSales is launching Paper Cut software to all faculty, staff, and students starting in the Fall 2013 semester. Paper Cut shows you your printing habits and gives you the ability to print wirelessly to any public printer on campus. A link to Paper Cut will be provided on the MyDSU portal.

Page allotments:

  • Faculty and Staff = 1,000 pages
  • Students = 500 pages.

As you print, pages will be deducted from your balance. (No worries, if you go to a zero balance, the software will still continue to print.)

The following link will show you how to use Paper Cut software and print wirelessly:

For Faculty and Staff, the Paper Cut software will automatically be installed on your computer this Wednesday, August 21 whenever you log off/log on your computer.
