Looking for volunteers for move-in day, 8/19

New Student Orientation is fast approaching and one of the best things about this event is the unity that the entire DSU community shows to the new freshman class.  The positive feedback from students and their families about the students and staff that participate is tremendous.

This year the Orientation committee made up of members of the Student Engagement and Leadership department and the Character Captains from Character U would like to invite all DeSales faculty and staff to help with the move in process on Sunday, August 19 from 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  You can sign up by emailing Nick Luchko at Nicholas.luchko@desales.edu.  Please include the following:

  • Your Name
  • Your Department
  • Your Email
  • Your T-Shirt Size
  • Any limitations of activity? If yes, please explain.

Those who are unable to carry objects or have limited mobility, we will have other jobs such as handing out water or directing families during move in.  There is a job for everyone who wants to be involved.  You will get an official orientation t-shirt, breakfast and lunch for helping.

Those who are interested should let us know by Friday, July 27.  There will be an orientation production meeting on Thursday, August 9 at 11 a.m. in the McShea Commons to go over the entire move in process.

PSF: River Cruise in Southern France Raffle

PSF strives to provide outstanding theatre at an affordable cost to our patrons and the community. As you may know, ticket prices cover just half of the cost of the productions. We make up the difference with fundraising appeals, an annual gala, and a yearly raffle. Although participation in the raffle is not a donation but a game of chance, it  generates more than $20,000 in revenue toward our artistic and education programs while affording one lucky winner the vacation of a lifetime – this year, a river cruise in Southern France.

As of this date, we have sold half of the 300 tickets we hope to sell this year. In order to sell the remaining 150 tickets, we need your help.

Please consider purchasing a ticket or an additional ticket, and please forward this link to the raffle’s web page to anyone who may be interested in supporting PSF or who would want a chance to win this incredible cruise and $2,000 in spending money.

Orders can be placed online or by calling 610-282-9455, ext. 6. We hope you’ll join us in making this raffle a tremendous success.

Additional information on the trip and its itinerary can be found at:

Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opens 7/21

Tennessee Williams’ favorite among his own plays, the Pulitzer prize-winning Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, opens Saturday, July 21 on the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival main stage, in rep with Much Ado About Nothing.

Featuring daytime television star Tom Degnan as Brick Pollitt and Eleanor Handley as Maggie, Cat previews July 19 and 20 and runs through August 5.

Degnan’s credits include Young Harry in the film Handsome Harry, with Jamey Sheridan and Steven Buscemi; Adam Munson in As the World Turns; and Joey Buchanan in the series One Life to Live. He has also made appearances on Law and Order, The Good Wife, and White Collar.

Eleanor Handley recently appeared as Maria in Twelfth Night, which was filmed and broadcast on PBS. She has also had roles on As the World Turns and Royal Pains. Handley was seen last season at PSF in The Comedy of Errors as Adriana and in The Two Noble Kinsman as Emilia.

Maggie “the Cat” still burns hot for her ex-football star husband, but Brick only has eyes for the bottom of a whiskey bottle.  When his father, Big Daddy, returns home from a cancer clinic thinking he’s got a clean bill of health, the family swarms for slice of the inheritance pie. Emotional shockwaves intensify as truths are finally told.

Directed by Thomas Ouellette, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof features Joe Vincent as Big Daddy, and Jo Twiss plays his wife, Big Mama. Carey Van Driest and Rob Kahn play Mae Flynn and Gooper, while Anthony Reimer and Larry Bull play Reverend Tooker and Doctor Baugh, respectively.

Bob Phillips has designed the Pollitt’s Mississippi estate where the play takes place. Lisa Zinni has designed the costumes, and the lighting is designed by Thom Weaver. PSF’s resident designer Matthew Given designed sound and Hannah Woodward serves as stage manager. Dudley Knight is the dialect coach.

Deleted e-mails older than 90 days to be automatically purged

Beginning on Monday, July 23, 2012, we will be changing the parameters within the DSU Exchange server to automatically purge any e-mails with the deleted folders for all Faculty and Staff that is greater than 90 days old.  IT will perform the setting change on the central server; you will not need to do anything for the changes to take effect in your account.

On average, DeSales University (DSU) receives approximately 20,000 e-mails each day.  As we all know, many of these messages can be spam, solicitations, surveys, and other unwanted junk mail.  There are a majority of these e-mails that we do not respond to and simply delete the e-mails. With the amount of e-mails that are received and immediately deleted, the IT Department is becoming concerned about the storage of all of these unwanted and ultimately deleted e-mails. Making these parameter changes will allow us to free up disk space and keep everyone’s deleted folders to a manageable size.
