Academic Oversight Committee Minutes from 12/12/12

December 12, 2012
3:00 p.m.
Trexler Library – PPL Conference Room

PRESENT: Mr. John Bell, Dr. Rodger Berg, Dr. Robert  Blumenstein, Ms. Deborah Booros, Dr. Brian Kane and Fr. Peter Leonard.

Dr. Rodger Berg called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.

1. Approval of the Minutes – The minutes of October 24, 2012 were approved.  Mr. Bell will see that they’re distributed via the DeSales Daily.

2. Syllabi Submission and Faculty Contracts – The committee conducted a follow up conversation regarding the submission of syllabi as it related to the start of faculty contracts.  Feeling that most faculty members understand that chairs and division heads need time to review syllabi, the committee concluded that a submission deadline approximately two weeks prior to the start of the academic semester seemed reasonable.  The committee would recommend that the deadline be adjusted to avoid falling on a  holiday or weekend.

3. Spring Semester Faculty Colloquia –  The committee considered topics for the February 13, 2013 Faculty Colloquium.  Dr. Kane will invite Richard Noll and Mr. Bell will invite Susan Lehman to present on recent publications.  The committee has received and approved a request that the April Faculty Colloquium date be set aside for the University Rountable.

4. January 2013 Dies Academicus–Dr. Berg will forward announcements for the January 14, 2013 Dies Academicus.  Mr. Bell will post the announcements in the Desales Daily.  Dr. Berg will send the announcement and the link to the article to Ms. Jean Lynch for distribution to the faculty in January.

5. Missing  Syllabi – Dr. Blumenstein circulated a list of syllabi that are missing from the archives in Academic Affairs and asked that each division head forward any syllabi on the list.

The meeting adjourned at 3:40 p.m.  The next meeting will be on January 23, 2013 in the Trexler Library PPL  Conference Room at 3:00 p.m.

Respectifully submitted,

John Bell, Division Head
Division of Performing Arts

Accepting DAWGs recommendations

The Admissions Staff is currently seeking recommendations for DAWGs – DeSales Admissions Welcoming Guides. DAWGs assist the Admissions Staff in the recruiting process by greeting families, giving tours, participating in student panels, and doing much more during open houses, scholarship days, the Bulldog Bash, and other events.

If you know of any students who are interested in speaking about their experiences and would serve as positive ambassadors for your divisions/major and DeSales in general, please recommend them by sending their name(s) to by February 1.

Seeking Scholarship Day Assistance

Scholarship Day for the incoming freshman class will be held this Saturday, February 2.

Undeclared students will be attending the morning session of Scholarship Day. We are looking for faculty members to help interview Undeclared students who have not yet indicated a track of study. In the past the number of Undeclared students has exceeded the number of faculty members available to interview them in the allotted time, so any volunteers would be much appreciated.

Faculty interviewers will be needed from 9:00AM – 11:00AM. Please consider this a real opportunity to recruit these students to your divisions.

If you are available to help or have any questions, please contact Melissa Tran at or ext. 1328.
