DeSales MBA – Capstone Team Achieves Global Recognition!
Before being awarded an MBA degree through DeSales University’s part-time MBA program, each student must participate in our Business Policy & Strategy Capstone course. A large part of this course is focused on the Business Strategy Simulation Game (BSG). The BSG is an online exercise that parallels the operations of an actual company. The class is broken up into groups that go head-to-head in competition against their classmates’ companies as well as other classes in universities worldwide. According to the BSG website, “Company co-managers must make decisions relating to plant operations, distribution and warehouse operations, work force compensation, online sales at the company’s web site, sales and marketing, and finance. The challenge is to craft and execute a competitive strategy that results in a respected brand image, keeps your company in contention for global market leadership, and produces good financial performance as measured by earnings per share, return on investment, stock price appreciation, and credit rating.”
One of our Capstone instructors, Edward Luttenberg, has been teaching the Capstone course for DeSales University’s MBA program for about 18+ years. His varied background with capital goods companies such as General Motors and extensive experience in international operations as well as joint venture negotiations, strategy development and manufacturing systems lend Mr. Luttenberg’ s students the added benefit of an instructor who’s been “in the trenches” of industry. Mr. Luttenberg says, “Many students find the BSG to be the best part of their MBA education as it gives them a chance to operate their own manufacturing company…it is truly a Capstone experience as it brings together all aspects of what they have been taught in the MBA wrapped together in a strategic plan to compete against other companies…it is a meaningful teamwork experience.” While Mr. Luttenberg has had a number of successful teams, this semester proved to be unique as one team consistently rated in the top 100 global teams worldwide even tying for first place in multiple weeks!
The team, G Company, was led by Michael Detwiler and Michael Baransky. This visionary team won achievement and recognition for their efforts in the four categories of company performance that all teams are reviewed on: Overall Score, Earnings Per Share, Return On Average Equity, and Stock Price. “We are pleasantly surprised by our success in the game. The first week I was just hoping to win first place in the class and really had no idea that they even had a top 100 global ranking. When we found out that our overall score ranked in the top 100 in the world, I started feeling pretty competitive and wanted to see how well we could do in the global rankings, “says Mike Detwiler. “I really enjoy strategy and I think my mind gravitates towards pondering and solving big picture challenges. I would really like to get involved with an organization in a capacity that gives me the opportunity to analyze external and internal conditions and shape long-term strategy.” The idea of the Capstone course is to allow our MBA students to use the tools that they’ve been given in their MBA courses in a simulated “real-world” experience. Mike Detwiler found, “The most important tools from my MBA courses that I’ve applied to this game have been the ability to read and comprehend the financial data and understand how that relates to your business and the competition as well as many of the tactical and strategic theories that I learned.” Our MBA director, Dr. David Gilfoil offered his congratulations. “Hats off to Mr. Luttenberg and the MBA team – G Company! They’re accomplishments have helped put DeSales University’s MBA program on the map. We wish these MBA students the same level of success in their careers as they move on as new DeSales University MBA graduates!”
