Walt Tremer, former NSA officer at DeSales

On Tuesday, November 16 at 7:00pm in the Air Products Room of the Trexler Library, Walt Tremer, former NSA officer, talked to the DeSales University community on his service in the NSA as a Chinese and Russian interpreter during the 1950s, and his role in breaking Soviet and Chinese codes.  Mr. Tremer discussed his rigorous language training at Harvard, his assignments in Asia as Chaing Kai-Shek’s personal intepreter, and following Soviet and Chinese troop movements.  The students followed up with Q&A.  It was a great time by all!

Former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge is coming to DeSales

On Wednesday, October 27, 2010 former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge will deliver the annual Furphy Lecture at DeSales University.  The event will take place at 7:30pm in Billera Hall on the DeSales campus.  Ridge will speak on “Global Engagement: A Current Perspective of World Events.”  The event is free, but tickets are required.  Contact Dr. Essig if you would like a ticket.  We hope to see you all there.

National Security Club Raffle is ON!!!!

The National Security Club is raffling off tickets for the Yamaha Zuma motorbike.  Tickets are $5 a piece or five tickets for $20.  Please visit the raffle table in the DUC during lunch hours or contact National Security Club treasurer Tom Borealo.  Winner is responsible for tax and title.  Courtesy of Scott Powersports, Rt 309 Coopersburg, PA.

Parents’ Family Weekend

On October 16 the National Security Club set up shop at the DeSales University Center for the Parents’ Family Weekend.  The new National Security Track/Club video was on display, raffle tickets for the Yamaha Zuma motorbike were being sold, and the brand new NSC t-shirts were also available.  Club members Jeff Anderson, Tom Borealo, and Ray Nebiker were on-site to answer any questions the parents may have about the Track and Club.

On Friday, September 24, 2010 Dr. Andrew Essig and seven DeSales University students from the Political Science National Security Track and National Security Club attended the Association of Former Intelligence Officers Fall Luncheon.  Guest speakers were Stewart Baker, who spoke about his new book “Skating on Stilts,” and Timothy Castle, who told the story of a secret American base in Loas to aid U.S. forces in their all-weather bombing campaigns against North Vietnam.

Former OSS Officer John Behling Coming to Speak at DeSales

JbehlingOn Tuesday, September 21 at 7:00pm in the Commonwealth Room in the DeSales University Center, the National Security Club/Track is proud to announce that Dr. John Behling will be speaking to our students on the “Evolution of Jihad.”  Dr. Behling was a member of the Office of Strategic Services and Military Intelligence during and after WWII.  He was a member of the Office of Intelligence and Research with the State Department, a foreign service officer, a free lance contract agent for the CIA, and a university professor.  He has numerous publications dealing with language studies, the USSR, and terrorism.  His most recent book is entitled “The DNA of Terrorism,” which is scheduled to be published within the next few months.  The event is free and open to the public, so please come and join us.

AFIO Director of National Intelligence Luncheon

Trip to Washington, D.C.

Hello everyone!  On March 16th students from the Political Geography (PO313) class and members of the National Security Club took a trip to the National Cryptologic Museum at the National Security Agency, Ft. Meade, MD and the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C.  At the Museum the students took a tour and had lunch with NSA personnel, who spoke to them about internships and job opportunities with NSA.  At IWP the students sat in on a lecture by General Walter Jajko and heard a presentation on internships and graduate school opportunities at the Institute.IMG_1618IMG_1617
